Een volledige prothese of kunstgebit is een hulpmiddel in het geval dat alle tanden en kiezen getrokken zijn. Een volledig kunstgebit ligt los in de mond en valt onder de uitneembare voorzieningen. Om een kunstgebit te maken zal de behandelaar eerst een afdruk met standaardlepels en een stug aangemaakt afdrukmateriaal (alginaat). Het is belangrijk dat in de deze afdruk de overgang van kaak naar wang (omslagplooi) staat. Van deze afdruk wordt in het tandtechnisch laboratorium een gipsmodel gemaakt en waarop van kunststof een een individuele lepel wordt vervaardigd. Met deze individuele lepel, die op maat is gemaakt voor de mond van de patiënt, kan een precisie afdruk worden genomen.
